Last updated 29 May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Yaba.tv (“Yaba”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal data when you use our datafree video service. We handle personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) and other applicable law. By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.
1. Who we are
Yaba.tv is the data controller responsible for your personal data. If you have questions or wish to exercise your rights, contact our privacy team at privacy@yaba.tv.
2. Data we collect
We collect the following categories of data:
- Account data — your name or display name, handle, phone number, email (if provided), avatar, and PIN/credentials in hashed form.
- Content data — videos and other material you upload, channel details, descriptions, and thumbnails.
- Usage data — what you watch, search, like, subscribe to, and your watch history and preferences.
- Device and connection data — device type, app version, IP address, approximate location, and your mobile carrier and network type (used to determine datafree eligibility).
- Datafree and billing data — which sessions were reverse-billed, and, for subscriptions, payment status and transaction references (card numbers are handled by our payment processors, not stored by us).
- Communications — messages you send us for support or other enquiries.
3. How we use your data
- To provide, operate, and personalise the Service, including recommendations.
- To enable datafree streaming by identifying your carrier and applying reverse billing to eligible content.
- To create and secure your account, authenticate you, and prevent fraud and abuse.
- To process subscriptions and payments.
- To communicate with you about the Service, including service updates and, where you have opted in, marketing.
- To measure and improve performance, reliability, and content quality.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms.
4. Legal bases
We process personal data where it is necessary to perform our contract with you (providing the Service), where we have a legitimate interest (such as security, analytics, and improving the Service), where you have given consent (such as optional marketing), and where we must comply with a legal obligation.
5. Sharing your data
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only as needed:
- Mobile carriers (MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile) and our datafree platform partners, to enable and reconcile reverse-billed streaming.
- Service providers who host, process payments, deliver content (CDN), and provide analytics on our behalf, under contract.
- Other users, where you choose to make content or channel information public.
- Authorities or third parties where required by law, to enforce our Terms, or to protect rights and safety.
- A successor entity in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences (such as theme), secure the Service, and understand usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though some features may not work without them.
7. Data retention
We keep personal data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. After you delete your account we delete or anonymise your data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records to comply with legal, tax, or fraud-prevention obligations, or to resolve disputes.
8. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, including the NDPA, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you and request a copy.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Request deletion of your data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent at any time.
- Request portability of data you provided to us.
- Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
To exercise these rights, email privacy@yaba.tv. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
9. Security
We use technical and organisational measures, including encryption in transit and hashing of credentials, to protect your data. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your data, we will notify you and the NDPC where required by law.
10. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside Nigeria. Where we transfer data internationally, we take steps to ensure it receives an adequate level of protection consistent with the NDPA.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version with a new “last updated” date and, for material changes, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
